Technical Failure (US)

In 1994 -1998 US cadaveric SPK and PAK cases, the technical failure rate (TF) was significantly lower for BD than ED; in PTA cases, TF rates did not significantly differ. For all ED cases, TF rates were not significantly different whether done with or without a Roux-en-Y-loop (Table 1).

By drainage technique, the most common causes of TF for 1994-1998 US cadaveric BD cases were graft thrombosis and infection; for ED cases, the most common TF cause was anastomotic leak. By transplant category (SPK, PAK, PTA), graft thrombosis was the most common cause in each of them. For PTA, late graft failures reported as thrombosis were significantly higher than for SPK and PAK, which may suggest some difficulty in distinguishing between TF and rejection in these cases (Table 2).
