Total Number of Pancreas Transplants

As of September 1999, nearly 13,000 (12,930) pancreas transplants have been reported to the IPTR. These include over 9,000 performed in the United States (US) and over 3,000 from outside the US (non-US) (Figure 1). Reporting for 1999 is not yet complete, so the total for the year will be higher. Because the 1999 data is not yet complete, the bar graph in Figure 1 shows totals only through 1998 at this time.

The 1999 cases reported through September (831 US and 150 non-US) were included in the analyses if a complete record was available. These analyses are for the 1996-1999 pancreas transplants.

Three-quarters of the pancreas transplants (75%) reported to the IPTR through the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) are from the US. Since 1987, reporting to UNOS has been obligatory for US cases, while reporting to the IPTR for non-US cases is voluntary. Reporting from non-US countries improved during this past year, but it is suspected that the number of non-US cases is at least 30% higher than illustrated.
