Analysis of Data

Contemporary data analysis is for the 1996-2002 pancreas transplants. The 2002 cases reported as of October 7, 2002 (1,083 US and 245 non-US) were included in the analyses if reliable data were available. Comparisons by era are shown beginning with 1987-88. In all cases, pancreas grafts were defined as functioning as long as recipients were insulin independent; kidney grafts were defined as functioning as long as recipients were dialysis-free or, if not on dialysis pretransplant, their posttransplant serum creatinine levels were below pretransplant levels. For purposes of analysis, death with a functioning graft (DWFG) was considered as graft failure unless stated otherwise. Historical data are shown by era to illustrate outcome over time.

Total Number of Pancreas Transplants for 2002 Annual Report

As of October 7, 2002, 18,909 pancreas transplants were reported to the IPTR. These included nearly 14,000 (13,951) performed in the United States (US) and nearly 5,000 (4,958) from outside the US (non-US). At the time of this Annual Report, reporting for 2002 was not yet complete. Thus the bar graph in Figure 1 shows totals only through 2001. (Please refer to the Midyear Update 2003 for updated 2002 totals.) For 2001, 1,792 pancreas transplant cases were reported: 1,359 US cases (73%) and 433 non-US cases (24%). The US pancreas transplants since 1987 are reported to the IPTR through the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS). There is data exchange from Eurotransplant to IPTR that provides transplant numbers and outcome information from the participating countries. Other non-US reporting is voluntary, but it is estimated that less than 5% of pancreas transplants performed are not included in the IPTR data.
