Pancreas Transplants by Category

United States pancreas transplants by major recipient categories, n=13,330, from October 1987 to October 2002 are shown in Figure 2. The majority of the cases, 78% (n=10,412), have been simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplants (SPK); 14% (n=1816) are pancreas after kidney (PAK) transplants; 6% (n=777) are pancreas transplants alone (PTA); 203 (1.5%) are pancreas transplants combined with at least one organ other than kidney; and 122 (0.9%) are unknown category. Solitary pancreas transplants, in particular PAK, increased significantly in recent years (p=0.0001). Of 1,359 records reported in 2001, the distribution of the 1,297 reported major recipient categories is: SPK 70% (n=904), PAK 22% (n=290), PTA 8% (n=103).

Pancreas transplants outside the US reported to the IPTR for transplants 1988 through 2001, n=3952, are shown by recipient category in Figure 3. The majority of the cases are SPK 93% (n=3658); compared to US totals, the proportion of PAK at 4% (n=166) and PTA at 3% (n=128) is lower, but there was a slight increase in PAK and PTA transplants in 2000 and 2001.
