Pancreas graft survival rates (GSRs) have improved consistently over time. Outcomes by years are grouped into eras (Figure 11a). Pancreas GSRs improved from 55% in 1987-92 to 95% in 2001-03, depending on the category. GSR improvement is due to better technical failure (TF) and rejection loss rates.

Figure 11a
1-year graft survival rates by era
For the 2001-03 US DD primary pancreas transplant cases available for analysis, the 1-year pancreas GSRs are similar across categories, but still significantly different: SPK 85%, PAK 79%, PTA 76%; (p=0.34 Wilcoxin, p=0.03 Log-Rank). By era, SPK 1-year GSRs improved from 76% 1987-92 to 85% 2001-03. PAK improved from 57% for 1987-92 to 79% 2001-03. PTA improved from 55% in 1987-92 to 76% in 2001-03 (Figure 11b). SPK kidney survival rates at 1 year have been at least 90% and at 5 years at least 70% since 1995.

Figure 11b
5-year graft survival rates by era
The pancreas GSRs at 5-year are also higher than in earlier eras. This trend in continual GSR improvement over time in long-term outcome is a positive indicator for 2001-03 cases in all categories, where only early outcome analysis can be done. GSR improvement at 5 years was from 61% SPK, 26% PAK and 26% PTA in 1987-92 to 70% SPK, 78% PAK and 81% PTA in 1996-98 (Figure 11c).

Figure 11c
10-year graft survival rates by era
Ten-year pancreas graft survival rates for the1987-92 era were 46% SPK (45% kidney), 17% PAK, 17% PTA. This is the only era at this time for which 10-year survival can be calculated.
