Effect of Preservation Time on USA Pancreas Transplant Outcome for 1998 - 2003 Cases

For 1998-2003 DD primary pancreas transplants, only 5% SPK, 7% PAK, 11% PTA were stored >24 hours. Mean preservation times were 14+6 hours SPK (n=3,759), 15+6 hours PAK (n=848), 16+6 hours PTA (n=352). Technical failure (TF) rate was somewhat higher with longer preservation time: SPK 8% for 4-7 hours vs. 12% for 28-31 hours; PAK 15% 4-7 hours vs. 18% 24-27 hours; PTA 16% 4-7 hours vs. 21% 24-27 hours. For GSRs, preservation time did not make a substantial difference except in PTA, where there was an inexplicable 1-year GSR of 58% 4-7 hours (n=19) vs. 81% 28-31 hours (n=15), with 73%-82% for in-between times.
