Total Number of Pancreas Transplants for 2003 Annual Report

As of December 31, 2003 21,208 pancreas transplants were reported to the IPTR.  These included nearly 16,000 (15,953) performed in the United States (US) and nearly 6,000 (5,555) from outside the US (non-US).  At the time of this Annual Report, reporting for 2003 was not yet complete.  Thus the bar graph in Figure 1 shows totals only through 2002.  For 2002, 1,844 pancreas transplant cases were reported: 1,444 US cases (78%) and 400 non-US cases (22%).

The US pancreas transplants since 1987 are reported to the IPTR through the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS).  There is data exchange from Eurotransplant to IPTR that provides transplant numbers and outcome information from the participating countries.  Other non-US reporting is voluntary, but it is estimated that less than 10% of pancreas transplants performed are not included in the IPTR data.
