Pancreas Transplants by Category

United States pancreas transplants by major recipient categories, n=14,705, from October 1987 to May 15, 2003 are shown in Figure 2. The majority of the cases, 78% (n=11,505), have been simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplants (SPK); 14% (n=2267) are pancreas after kidney (PAK) transplants; 6% (n=833) are pancreas transplants alone (PTA). Solitary pancreas transplants, in particular PAK, increased significantly in recent years (p=0.0001). Of 1,444 records reported in 2002, the distribution of the 1,417 reported major recipient categories is: SPK 65% (n=917), PAK 26% (n=375), PTA 9% (n=125).

Pancreas transplants outside the US reported to the IPTR for 1988 through 2003 are shown by recipient category in Figure 3 (n=4756).  Most of the cases are SPK 92% (n=4336); compared to US totals, the proportion of PAK at 5% (n=234) and PTA at 4% (n=186) is lower, but there continues to be some increase in PAK and PTA transplants in 2000-2003. Of the 368 records reported for 2002, the distribution is: SPK 83% (n=305), PAK 11% (n=41), PTA 6% (n=22).
