Demographic US Cases
Table 9 shows the basic demographics for deceased donor (DD) primary US pancreas transplants reported to UNOS from January 1, 2000 to June 6, 2004 (71% SPK, 21% Pak, 8% PTA). SPK is the largest category, with a significantly higher percentage of minorities, significantly longer waiting time and the highest rate of Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) A, B and DR mismatches. Most SPK pancreas transplants are now enteric drained (ED) for duct management. PAK is the next largest category where all recipients already underwent a kidney transplant. PAK recipients are the oldest, have the longest duration of diabetes and a high HLA mismatch rate. PTA is the smallest category. PTA recipients are generally younger and thus have a shorter duration of diabetes. Waiting list time is shorter for the PTA category, but preservation time is longer compared to SPK. Significantly more females than males receive a PTA. The proportion of ED grafts is the lowest in PTA compared to SPK and PAK.
